First thought..if the soldiers have been there 50 years, they must be getting gray. Seriously, though, from a strategic sense, it seems part of an effort to create a US mobile force, particularly with regard to the mideast. In addition, the former Iron Curtain countries, Poland, the baltic states, Romania, etc are now friendly buffer states. This move would be safe and make more combat troops available where needed.
