Carol I am SO with you! Let's repeal the 17th Amendment!
Senators should indeed be selected by their respective state legislatures. That was the intent of the Founders in Article 1, Section 3, Clause 1 :
"The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature thereof, for six Years; and each Senator shall have one Vote"
This insured that each state would have actual and adequate representation in the Senate. Representatives take care of the interests of their districts, while the STATES have less official representation than foreign countries who have lobbyists bending the ears of Senators at all hours. Making these Senators directly accountable to the State legislatures is an idea whose time has come...again!
The 17th Amendment would have to be repealed. That's a heavy lift, and sadly would probably be fought along partisan lines.
Radical special interest groups with deeeeeeep pockets, like MoveOn.org and George Soros, seem to have more pull with our Senators than we voters do. Just two months ago I called the office of Senator Bill Nelson to register my disapproval of the Baucus Bill and a very nice and courteous young man took my call. I asked him how the callers were reacting on this subject. He told me that I was one of his "younger" callers, and that most of the people who called him felt the same way I did. They were AGAINST "health care reform." His words.
Bill Nelson voted FOR this wretched bill and all subsequent bills!
Now I ask you, who had more representation when Nelson voted for this bill? The deep-pocketed left-wing NUT ROOTS or the retirees in the state of Florida who will have their Medicare SLASHED to pay for this legislation?
Its a great idea Carol, but sadly this will never happen. I just hope we can hold onto the electoral college---many would love to do away with that also.
J-what an excellent and thought - filled comment!! It is great to know that others know our Constitution's content...!! and You are right-people in the know - of all ages- do NOT want this huge government take over -"health care" Like your site BTW :-)
RR-It is my belief that we in the US are finally waking up---and are going to fight government oppression...I hope... geeez-I used to like the word 'hope'--bho has even wrecked that for me! :-)
