Military deaths
The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel who died in Afghanistan and Iraq:
Lucas M. Bregg, 19, of Wright City, Mo.; private, Army. Bregg died Wednesday in Baghdad of injuries suffered from a noncombat-related incident. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft.Hood, Texas.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.
Brock H. Chavers, 25, of Bulloch, Ga.; sergeant, Army. Chavers was one of four soldiers killed Monday in Konduz, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment in Americus, Ga.
Aaron E. Fairbairn, 20, of Aberdeen, Wash.; private first class, Army. Fairbairn was one of two soldiers killed July 4 at Combat Outpost Zerok in Afghanistan when insurgents attacked the outpost using small arms and mortar fire. Mark A. Garner, 30, of Elkin, N.C.; captain, Army. Garner died Monday in Argandab district, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany.
Nicolas H. J. Gideon, 20, of Murrieta, Calif.; private first class, Army. Gideon died Monday at Forward Operating Base Salerno in Afghanistan of injuries suffered earlier that day in Paktya, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fires. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.
Roger G. Hager, 20, of Gibsonville, N.C.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Hager was one of two Marines killed Wednesday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
John E. Hayes, 36, of Middleburg, Fla.; master sergeant, Marine Corps. Hayes was one of two Marines killed Wednesday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Chester W. Hosford, 35, of Hastings, Minn.; specialist, Army. Hosford was one of four soldiers killed Monday in Konduz, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 106th Cavalry Regiment in Dixon, Ill.
Issac L. Johnson, 24, of Columbus, Ga.; specialist, Army. Johnson was one of four soldiers killed Monday in Konduz, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 108th Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition Squadron in Rome, Ga.
Gregory J. Missman, 36, of Batavia, Ohio; specialist, Army. Missman died Thursday at Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained elsewhere in Afghanistan on Wednesday, when enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire. He was assigned to the 704th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.
Tony Michael Randolph, 22, of Henryetta, Okla.; petty officer second class, Navy. Randolph died Monday in an improvised explosive device attack on his convoy in northern Afghanistan. He was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 8 in Sigonella, Italy, and was deployed with his platoon to Joint Task Force South conducting counter-improvised-explosive-device operations in support of Task Force Zabul in Afghanistan.
Michael C. Roy, 25, of North Fort Myers, Fla.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Roy died Wednesday while supporting combat operations in Nimroz province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Special Operations Advisor Group, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Charles S. Sharp, 20, of Adairsville, Ga.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Sharp died July 2 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Christopher M. Talbert, 24, of Galesburg, Ill.; specialist, Army. Talbert died Tuesday in Shindad, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry Regiment in Marion, Ill.
Darren Ethan Tate, 21, of Canyon, Texas; aviation ordnanceman airman, Navy. Tate died of nonhostile causes Wednesday at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima and deployed as an Individual Augmentee to Combined Security Transition Command in Afghanistan.
Derwin I. Williams, 41, of Glenwood, Ill.; second lieutenant, Army. Williams was one of four soldiers killed Monday in Konduz, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 106th Cavalry Regiment in Dixon, Ill.

My own brother, 42, has been unable to find work has enlisted in the Army (8 years of prior service in the Navy) and is scheduled to go to Afghanistan.
